Somebody decided last night that they didn’t like how close my mother was following them, and brake checked her. Unfortunately for all involved, the other party was in their brand new car with its brand new, fresh off the lot, breathe on the brake pedal and the anti-locks will come on, brakes. Check out those squiggly creases in the hood curves....
Update: it’s been to the body shop and the estimate without taking it apart is $8,100! For a hood and a couple headlight lenses! It was a 20 mph impact and they’re saying the radiator supports and other shit underneath is bent! I can buy a used hood that’s already the right color for $400. Headlghts are nothing, what the hell is Abra auto body smoking?!?

Ouch. That sucks hard.
I hate those people in their breathe on the brakes and they come to a screaming antilock stop when I’m in a car with normal brakes. You just can’t follow them far enough because the bastards will just cut you off and pull this shit.
It's why I can't drive a car that is too old in a city. It's just too dangerous.

Did the police determine who was at fault? Hoping it was the other party.

Doesn’t matter, insurance will still hold you at fault if you ever rear end someone. Their reasoning is if you are a safe distance behind you will never ever rear end the car in front.

It varies from state to state, and I’m sure a police report with a citation for aggressive driving would be very compelling for his mother’s insurance company.

not really. In Ontario if you hit the car from behind it's your fault. Full stop.

What was their reaction? I’ve wanted to brake check someone before, but then I remember they could hit my car.

Headlights are crazy expensive. Your car for example is about $2k per side. Don’t know about jags though. Most body shops will quote everything brand new unless you ask them to do otherwise. It’s probably somewhere in the range of 20-30 labor hours by the time it’s all said and done. Quote doesn’t sound that nuts to me, but I’m desensitized.

For example, they quote $2,100 for a new hood. I found one on ebay in the correct color for $450 including shipping. The insurance company can total it, and we’ll take the smaller sum and keep the car and cobble it back together like was done twice before we ever owned it.
It’s the circle of life....

Good plan.
Did you ever get your plugs and and valve covers done?

Next Wednesday. My father is taking off of work in order to lend a second pair of hands.

Not covered by insurance?

No, it is. Insurance just wants to have the car fixed like it was when it left the factory, which costs $8,100+ and totals the car. Meanwhile, every part it needs bought from an auto recyclers on ebay with a donor car the same color as ours rings up at $1,800. But insurance doesn’t do that. So we’ll have to buy back the car from them to fix it the smart way.

Oh I see. I was going to say, insurance getting brand new parts sounds awesome ...except when it totals the car. :(
Does that mean you’ll get a salvage title? Damn shame for such a minor bingle on such a nice car. Best of luck to you.

What do I do if I have an insulator stuck in the tube...other than cry, that is.

Use a needle nose pliers or try walking a small pick or screwdriver around the outside of it to free it up. I usually stick the pliers in as far as I can without damaging something else and rotate the insulator. If it comes out in pieces no big deal.

I called my mechanic, he told me to spray a little silicone down the sides away from the coil, which worked. The other side came off cleanly...
Cleanly in the sense that the insulators stayed on the plugs. Everything is absolutely soaked in oil.....and I’m running out of time to get the valve covers off.

Silicone spray is a good idea. Do you have to have it running today?

No, no, god no. I was far too ambitious.
My father and I got it apart and got all the plugs changed out, but those little yellow vacuum/emission control lines kept snapping so we have to go get some hose that will fit over them to bridge the gaps. And the I only got the passenger side valve cover unbolted and something in the back won’t let it go. (BTW, if you’ve got any tips for those valve covers, they would be greatly appreciated. Especially the drivers side being trapped under a metal cooling duct of some kind off the radiator in the front). So we have to do those before we can put the packs back on. Question about that, do I put the insulators in the pack and the pack on the plugs, or do I put the insulators on the plugs and drop the packs over them?
Best part is, now I must suffer the indignity of being dropped off at work tomorrow by my mother. My coworkers can be very cruel old men...

Dealers sell the plastic vacuum line by the foot/yard whatever. It’s usually pretty cheap. I don’t really have any tips, just nice stuff out of the way and pull them off. Maybe a little harder than it sounds, but many things are when it comes to working on cars.
Insulators go in the coil packs, then reinstall the coils.
Sounds like you’re having fun with the whole experience!

A friend of mine once rear ended someone that stopped suddenly for no reason in a merge lane onto I95 in a 65 zone. The cops found the person that stopped at fault for stopping in a merge lane.
